    Rating B
    • A — Strong dossier: several independent sources plus primary evidence (original media, records, measurements) a researcher could use without interviewing anyone.
    • B — Well documented: multiple independent witnesses with at least some contemporary primary material, or one witness with substantial primary corroboration (photos, recordings, contemporaneous notes, documents).
    • C — Multi-source but soft: several witnesses or a long run of reports, but mostly testimony and after-the-fact secondary sources (newspapers, folklore collections, later interviews). Little or no primary physical evidence. Regional legend clusters such as the Bridgewater Triangle land here.

Summary

The Broad Haven School UFO incident occurred on February 4, 1977, when a group of pupils at Broad Haven Primary School in Pembrokeshire, Wales, reported observing a metallic object in a nearby field during lunch break. Several children also reported seeing a figure near the object. The case became widely known after headmaster Ralph Llewellyn separately interviewed the pupils and collected drawings of what they claimed to have seen. The consistency of many of the drawings and the number of witnesses made the event one of Britain's best-known schoolyard UFO cases. The sighting later became associated with the broader 1977 Pembrokeshire UFO wave, often called the Broad Haven Triangle or Welsh Triangle.

Background

On Friday, February 4, 1977, children at Broad Haven Primary School reported seeing an unusual object in fields beyond the school grounds. Accounts generally describe a metallic silver object with a raised central section or dome. Several witnesses also claimed to have seen a humanoid figure near the object.

Initial reactions from staff were skeptical. However, the reports persisted and eventually attracted the attention of headmaster Ralph Llewellyn. On the following Monday, February 7, he interviewed pupils separately and asked them to write and draw what they had observed. These drawings became the most frequently cited evidence associated with the case.

The drawings showed similarities, most commonly depicting an elongated metallic object with a raised central section. Later retellings often stated that the drawings were made immediately after the sighting; surviving documentation indicates they were collected several days later, after the intervening weekend. This remains an important consideration when evaluating the evidential strength of the drawings.

The case quickly attracted local and national attention. Families involved contacted local authorities, and the sighting entered British UFO literature. Photographs of the children holding their drawings were widely reproduced in newspapers and later documentaries.

Broad Haven did not remain an isolated report. Additional sightings involving local residents, school staff, hotel owners, farmers, and other witnesses were reported throughout Pembrokeshire in 1977. These events collectively became known as the Broad Haven Triangle or Welsh Triangle.

Interpretation and Legacy

The Broad Haven School incident remains noteworthy because of three factors:

1. A relatively large group of witnesses.
2. Preserved witness drawings.
3. Contemporary documentation.

At the same time, the case relies primarily upon witness testimony and drawings rather than physical evidence. No confirmed photographs of the reported object were obtained, and no physical trace evidence conclusively linked to the event was documented.

More than any single detail, Broad Haven is remembered as the event that brought national attention to the wider 1977 Pembrokeshire UFO wave. It remains one of the best-known British UFO incidents involving child witnesses.
