Adding to GG-2026-051 — Beast of Gévaudan.

Open research question

Trace the earliest surviving documentary source for each major claim associated with the Beast of Gévaudan, including victim totals, creature descriptions, witness accounts, royal involvement, and the identification of the animal killed by Jean Chastel in June 1767. Determine which claims are supported by contemporary records and which first appear in later retellings or folklore.

A source, research note, or further-reading link closes this question when staff accept it. Evidence and corrections stay attached for staff and do not close it by themselves.

Staff review every contribution before it is added to the file. A correction is a proposal: accepting it does not replace the official record. Rejected items are handled like rejected case submissions.
