On 13 November 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr., 23, shot and killed his parents, two brothers, and two sisters in their beds at 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, on the south shore of Long Island. A jury convicted him in November 1975 of six counts of second-degree murder. On 18 December 1975 George and Kathleen Lutz moved in with Kathy’s three children. They left on 14 January 1976, after 28 days, and said the house had driven them out. Jay Anson’s The Amityville Horror (1977) made that claim a bestseller. In September 1979 DeFeo’s lawyer, William Weber, said he and the Lutzes had created the horror story…
