The House of the Seven Gables — the 1668 Turner-Ingersoll mansion on Salem’s waterfront — is famous for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel and for a long-running ghost tradition: apparitions often identified as Susanna Ingersoll, a “ghost child,” phantom footsteps, and shadow figures, including around the secret staircase. The building’s history and literary fame are well documented. The paranormal claims remain anecdotal and unverified. A popular story that the secret staircase hid people during the 1692 witch trials is not supported by the historical record.
