On the night of 19–20 September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, were driving home on U.S. Route 3 from a trip to Niagara Falls. South of Colebrook they watched a light move in the sky. Near Indian Head, Barney stopped the car, looked through binoculars, and said he saw figures in the windows of a craft. They reached home around dawn with a stretch of the drive they could not account for. The story of being taken aboard and examined was not in that first report.
