On 8 July 1947, Roswell Army Air Field announced that the 509th Bomb Group had recovered a flying disc from a ranch northwest of town. The same afternoon, Eighth Air Force headquarters in Fort Worth said the debris was a weather balloon and a radar target, and photographed it. The rancher’s account the next day listed rubber, tinfoil, paper, sticks, and tape, about five pounds, with no engine. No report from that week mentions a body.
