In late August 1878, Esther Cox, 18, was living in Amherst, Nova Scotia, with her eldest sister Olive and Olive’s husband, Daniel Teed, when the house began to rap, throw bedding, and, by the family’s account, write on the plaster. The sentence that got into the papers was “Esther Cox, you are mine to kill.” A local doctor, Caritte, is described at the bed for that writing. The noise stopped while she had diphtheria and while she stayed with another sister in Sackville, New Brunswick, and started again, with fires, after she came home.
