Lights over Brown Mountain, a long ridge north of Morganton in Burke County, North Carolina, are a standing local report. The first known newspaper account is the Charlotte Daily Observer of 13 September 1913. A sign on N.C. Highway 181 says Cherokee tradition dates the lights to a battle with the Catawba in the year 1200, the spirits of women searching for dead warriors. No early record of that story has been produced.
