On the night of 1–2 February 1959, nine hikers led by Igor Dyatlov, 23, died on the slope of Kholat Syakhl, height 1079, in the northern Urals. They had pitched their tent there on the evening of 1 February, short of Mount Otorten, after the weather closed in. Searchers found the tent on 26 February, cut open from the inside, with boots, coats, and food still inside, and footprints leading down toward the trees. Five of the nine died of cold.
