On October 21, 1978, 20-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich disappeared while flying a Cessna 182L, registration VH-DSJ, from Moorabbin Airport toward King Island across Bass Strait. During his final recorded radio exchange with Melbourne Flight Service, Valentich reported bright lights and an apparent aircraft moving repeatedly above him, later describing a long shape, a green light, and a shiny or metallic appearance.
