Between August 1799 and August 1800, the coastal town of Sullivan, Maine, experienced what historians recognize as the first fully documented, multi-witness ghost story in post-Revolutionary American history. Over 100 witnesses—including town officials, physicians, and local skeptics—reported encountering the luminous, disembodied spirit of Eleanor "Nelly" Butler, who communicated via cellar knockings, issued marital mandates, and delivered a precise fatal prophecy.
